The recipient epitomizes the definition of "Coach". Award
recipient becomes a lifetime MITCA member
with the additional benefit of attending the clinics for a $25 fee per

Established in 1990, and named in honor of Alice Averill and Nancy
Grant, this award is given to non-coaching person(s) in recognition of
their "behind the scenes" devotion and selfless contribution of time and
effort on behalf of Cross Country and/or Track and Field.

In Cross Country and in Track & Field, eight coaches (one boys' coach
and one girls' coach in each of four divisions) are selected through a
majority membership vote at the business meeting of their respective sport
clinic (Cross Country clinic in November,
Track & Field clinic in January
or February).
Coaches must be a MITCA member (by October 1 for Cross
Country, by May 1 for Track and Field) and are "nominated" for Coach of the Year through their team finish at
the MHSAA final meet for each sport - nominees are contacted by the
Executive Board for season and career information.

The Finish Line Award recognizes ongoing contributions, support and
assistance to the sports of XC and T&F. It is awarded to individual
person(s) and their respective media employer(s) such as radio, TV,
magazines, newspapers, and web companies.

The MITCA Hall of Fame is intended to recognize outstanding Cross
Country and outstanding Track and Field coaches. What constitutes
outstanding are a variety of measures such as success within MHSAA
playoffs, and career endurance. The link below outlines these
measures in detail. Ambrose and Sweeney Award winners are
automatically inducted into the Hall of Fame; up to four other coaches are
inducted each year after evaluation of their application by the MITCA
Executive Board.

Given to the assistant coach who has worked at least five years; is a
MITCA member; and has been nominated by their head coach with support of the
athletic director, an opposing coach or parent. It is possible to receive
this award once every five years.

Given to a junior high head or assistant coach who has worked at least
five years; is a MITCA member; and has been nominated by his/her
head/assistant coach, with the support of the athletic director, principal,

Academic All-State Awards are given per the requirements below:
1. The
Academic All-State Award is based on a student’s GPA (grade point
average).
2.
Athletes must have a cumulative high school GPA established prior to the
current season (Freshman not eligible).
3.
GPA’s must be cumulative and based on a 4.000 system to three decimal
places. Schools not using a 4.000 system will have to make their
conversions to three decimal places. Weighted GPA’s will not be
considered.
4.
Non-freshman athletes must have a cumulative, non-weighted high
school GPA of 3.500 or higher AND place at the Final Meet. Relay team
members ARE eligible.

Academic All-State awards both the individual and the team per the
requirements below:
1. The

a non-freshman with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.500 who finishes in
the top half of the final meet field (NOTE: an athlete with a GPA of 3.800
and finishing in the top half of the field will automatically receive an
award)

In the Lower Peninsula:
The top eight places in each event are awarded a MITCA All-State certificate
at the MHSAA Final Meet.
1st - 3rd place -1st team all-state
4th - 6th place - 2nd team all-state
7th - 8th place - Honorable mention all state

In the Upper Peninsula:
The top five finishers in each event are awarded a MITCA All-State

In the Lower Peninsula:
The top thirty finishers in each division race are awarded a MITCA All-State
certificate at the MHSAA Final Meet. Errors in certificates can be

In the Upper Peninsula:
The top ten finishers in each division race are awarded a MITCA All-State
certificate, mailed to the athlete's school.

The T&F and XC Dream Teams are comprised of athletes, based
upon their performance at the MHSAA Final meet (NOTE: Upper Peninsula
athletes may be part of this listing dependent upon their final meet
performance AND earlier season competition against Lower Peninsula
athletes).
Mr/Ms accolades are awarded to the one senior boy and one
senior girl in each sport who, in the estimation of the MITCA Executive
Board, is the top senior athlete in that sport of that year.
The Dream Team and Mr/Ms awards are appointed, not nominated or voted upon.
